Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
